Twitter to Remove Old Verification Badges

Old verification badges will be removed from Twitter in the upcoming months, according to its new owner Elon Musk, because of the enormous changes the microblogging platform has undergone since his acquisition.
Mr. Musk tweeted on Thursday night, “Far too many corrupt legacy Blue ‘verification’ checkmarks exist, so no choice but to remove legacy Blue in coming months.”

The elimination would probably make it easier for more people to sign up for Twitter Blue and pay the $8 monthly cost that Elon Musk mandates be paid in order to obtain and keep the blue verification badge.
Since the Tesla owner finalized the acquisition agreement in October, he has made abrupt changes to the platform, including dissolving Twitter’s nine-member board of directors and laying off a significant portion of the company’s 7,500 employees—roughly 75%.
The Microblogging platform director of product management, Esther Crawford, also revealed on Wednesday that the social media site will be introducing a new “official label” function for a select group of accounts. She emphasized that not all previously verified identities would have access to the new tool.
The accounts that will receive the official label, according to Ms. Crawford, are strictly distinct profiles.
