Turkey’s official name will be changed to ‘Türkiye’ by the United Nations

Turkey to Turkiye

Following a request from Ankara, the United Nations has altered the name of the Republic of Turkey’s country within the organization from “Turkey” to “Türkiye.”

According to UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu wrote to Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday, June 1, demanding that “Türkiye” be used instead of “Turkey” in all matters.

According to the spokeswoman, the country name change took effect as soon as the letter was received.

On Tuesday, Cavusoglu said that the letter had been officially submitted to the UN and other international bodies.

“Together with our Directorate of Communications, we have been successful in preparing a good ground for this,” said the letter.

“We have made it possible for the UN and other international organizations, countries to see this change to using ‘Türkiye’,” Cavusoglu told Anadolu Agency.

Turkey began the transition to Türkiye as its internationally recognized official name in English in December, when Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan issued a memorandum requesting that the public adopt Türkiye to describe the country in all languages.

Erdogan noted at the time, “Türkiye is recognised as an umbrella brand for our country in national and international settings.” “Türkiye represents and expresses the Turkish people’s culture, civilisation, and values the best.”

Erdogan also recommended businesses to label their exported items with “made in Türkiye” and told government entities to use Türkiye in their correspondence.
