According to the Recording Academy, there are presently discussions of adding an Afrobeats category to the prestigious Grammy Awards.
Harvey Manson Jr., the CEO of The Recording Academy, announced on September 26 that the organization conducted a meeting and listening session with important figures in the Afrobeats movement, including producers, artists, songwriters, and executives.
He added that in order to ensure that all Afrobeats subgenres are properly represented, members of The Academy must submit a proposal before deliberations can commence.
Veteran Nigerian musicians like King Sunny Ade, Femi Kuti, and Seun Kuti have all been nominated by The Academy for their varied work produced over the years.
The Grammy Awards have recently kept up their tradition of praising the development and popularity of the Afrobeats genre.
Wizkid and Burna Boy, two well-known musicians from Nigeria, were nominated for and ultimately took home the prestigious prize for “Best Music Video” and “Best Global Music Album,” respectively, in 2021.
