After being convicted of murder and other crimes for viciously rapping and killing his 15-year-old daughter, Zaria, in 2019, Joshua Lee Burgess, a 35-year-old man from Union County, North Carolina, was sentenced to death.
Joshua Lee Burgess allegedly tormented Zaria sexually and psychologically for 22 hours before slitting her throat. When Zaria, who lives with her biological mother, paid him a visit over the weekend, the event occurred at his Monroe home.
According to People, the Union County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement, “This was absolutely an extremely horrific, awful, and cruel homicide of an innocent child.” “Everyone involved in this case was emotionally drained. We continue to be saddened by Zaria’s mother’s death and pray for her.”
Burgess allegedly went to the police station after killing his daughter to confess to her murder. He informed the authorities that Zaria’s body was at his residence and provided them with his address, where they discovered her dead.
Burgess was found guilty of first-degree murder, statutory rape, three counts of statutory sex offenses, and first-degree sexual exploitation of a minor.
Burgess was sentenced to death for murder and a minimum of roughly 76 years in prison on the other crimes by a Union County jury. Following a three-week trial, the punishment was handed down after nearly three hours of debate.
