Former Egypt coach (Hassan Shehata) condemns Mohamed Salah poor contribution to the national team
Mohamed Salah “hasn’t done anything” for the national team, according to former Egypt coach Hassan Shehata, despite his success with his club.
Salah experienced double heartbreak with Egypt this year after Senegal defeated them in the Africa Cup of Nations final in February. After losing to the same opponent in a play-off and having Salah miss from the spot in the subsequent penalty shootout, Egypt was unable to go to the World Cup in Qatar.
The Liverpool forward has won the Champions League and all four domestic trophies with Liverpool, but he has not been able to repeat that success with Egypt.
Shehata, who led Egypt to three consecutive AFCON championships between 2006 and 2010, thinks Salah need to do more for his country.
‘Salah is a great player, he’s done so much abroad and he’s one of the world’s biggest stars,’ he said on the Sada El-Balad TV channel.
‘But he didn’t do anything for the Egyptian national team, he should have done more.’
Salah, who has 83 caps and 45 goals for his country, suggested earlier this year that he would stop playing for the national team.
“I am proud to play with you whether I am with you or not in the future,” he remarked. “I am honored that I played with you.”
