At a reception for IOC president Thomas Bach on Saturday in Cairo, Egypt‘s sports minister Ashraf Sobhi said that his country intends to submit an application to host the 2036 Olympic Games.
According to Sobhi, President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi has approved Egypt’s bid to host the 2036 Summer Olympics.
Egypt would be the first African or Arab country to host the Olympics if its application were accepted.
During a joint press conference with Sobhi, Bach stated, “Egypt has strong sporting infrastructures and if it can host the Olympic Games, it will be historic.”
Early in the month, a prominent Egyptian official revealed that Egypt, Greece, and Saudi Arabia were in discussions to co-host the 2030 World Cup.
Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, Egypt hosted both the 2018 and 2019 editions of the handball world tournament.
