Awoleye Oluwatofunmi, a 23-year-old suspect in online fraud in Nigeria, was detained by Kwara police for allegedly defrauding Vonapolouis Moss, an American, of $1,000.
According to Ilorin police commissioner Paul Odama, the defendant conned the victim of $1,000 while posing as an American on TikTok under the name Howard Adams.
The victim was lured to fly into Nigeria on January 9, 2023, through the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos, according to Mr. Odama, who said the suspect later went a step further.
He said that the victim arrived in Ilorin the next day by plane and was met by the suspect before the latter was apprehended on the basis of useful information.
Before being rescued by police officers, the suspect allegedly deceitfully collected from the victim an undefined sum of money.
He went on to say that the appropriate authorities have been informed for future action.
In addition, according to the authorities, the woman had been sent to an unidentified location until her return to the United States.
According to the police chief, “the command would continue to carry out its responsibilities with a full sense of responsibility and be willing at all times to protect the rights of every citizen.”
The suspect could not be located for comment, and it was unclear at the time whether he had retained counsel in connection with the case.
