British To Impose Visa Ban On Nigerian Politicians Caught In Violence, Rigging General Elections

British High Commissioner Catriona Liang

The British government has pledged to ban entry to the country for anyone who incited violence or actually used violence to obstruct the 2023 election process.

On Thursday, Catriona Liang, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, responded to a number of allegations made by Mr. Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), regarding the assassinations of his party’s candidates and executives in various parts of the nation.

She asked that in order for the British government to take proper measures against such a person, the Labour Party provide the commission with a list of individuals it suspects may use violence to sabotage the 2023 election process.

She claimed that the identities of individuals suspected of causing disturbance prior to, during, and after the election and undermining the nation’s democracy would be of interest to the government of the United Kingdom.

However, if you know of somebody who has called for violence or undoubtedly engaged in violent behavior, we have utilized the visa program in the past and will do so again to prevent that individual from traveling to the UK.

Therefore, Catriona urged, “If you have any credible evidence of people you can name as having engaged in violent operations or inciting violence, please do pass that on to us because we do act upon it and it’s concerning to hear the number of potential attacks on all candidates.

She emphasized that all of Abure’s criticisms were well timed since “I think those are the main issues I have gathered from what you have stated,” she remarked. With the security partners, we will bring it up. In fact, we will be discussing the elections with the entire community tomorrow. This is therefore really timely,” she said.
