Dani Alves, a former defender for Barcelona and Brazil, is allegedly accused of sexually assaulting a lady in a nightclub in Spain in December 2022, according to a statement made on Tuesday by Catalonia’s Supreme Court.
Reuters says that Alves has denied any misconduct in the interim.
In response to a woman’s complaint over alleged events that took place in a Barcelona nightclub last month, the court in Barcelona reportedly said in a statement that it had begun procedures “for an alleged crime of sexual assault.”
A spokeswoman for the court acknowledged to Reuters that Dani Alves was the subject of the complaint, despite the fact that the court allegedly did not expressly name Alves in the statement. She added that the case was under investigation but the court had no further information.
According to prior reports in Spanish media, a woman claimed Alves had inappropriately touched her while she was out with friends in a nightclub in late December 2022, caressing only her underpants.
Dani Alves, who is presently in Mexico playing for the Pumas UNAM, “vehemently denies” any charges, according to a spokesperson for the player who talked to Reuters.
Alves denied any such behavior despite reports to the contrary that he admitted to being at the club with others in an interview with Antena 3 last week.
“I was dancing and having a good time without invading anyone’s space,” he said. “I don’t know who this lady is…How could I do that to a woman? No.”
