Blogger Belotserkovskaya Found Guilty in Russia/Ukraine war Remarks

Veronika Belotserkovskaya

Veronika Belotserkovskaya, a well-known blogger and cookbook author, was given a prison term by Russia for disseminating what was deemed false information about its armed forces.

The Investigative Committee of Russia announced the start of an investigation into Ms. Belotserkovskaya on March 16, 2022, a few weeks after Russian soldiers occupied Ukraine.

It was the first instance under a new rule that was established earlier in the month that punished anything considered offensive to the Russian military that was made public.

She was accused of spreading intentionally misleading information about how the Russian armed forces had destroyed cities and the civilian population of Ukraine, especially children.

A wanted list was created for Ms. Belotserkovskaya, and an arrest warrant was issued without her presence. Her property was taken by the Russian government and is now worth $2.2 million or 153 million rubles. Additionally, she was called a “foreign agent.”

The second well-known public person to be jailed in absentia, Ms. Belotserkovskaya was also given the longest prison term under the new law.
