President Joseph Biden‘s penultimate annual physical examination before he is anticipated to announce his candidacy for reelection in 2024, when he would be 82, resulted in a “fit for duty” diagnosis from his doctor on Thursday.
After rigorous testing, the much anticipated report revealed some relatively minor concerns but concluded that Biden was free of major physical and neurological conditions.
According to President Biden’s doctor, Kevin O’Connor, in a letter made public by the White House, “President Biden remains a healthy, vigorous, 80-year-old male, who is fit to successfully execute the duties of the Presidency, including those of Chief Executive, Head of State, and Commander in Chief.”
The President continues to be fit for duty and discharges his duties in full, without any exceptions or adjustments.
The morning was spent at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, a hospital in the suburbs of Washington, DC, with a presidential facility, where Biden, the oldest person to ever hold the office of US president, finished a battery of tests he started last year.
Despite the fact that the election season is heating up, he has not yet announced his intention to run for reelection. The current front-runner on the GOP side is former president Donald Trump, who was defeated by Joe Biden in the turbulent 2020 election.
After two years in which he guided the nation beyond the Covid pandemic, brought an end to the US war in Afghanistan, and rallied Western nations against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Biden is expected to run on his heavyweight political record.
Yet during the campaign, concerns about his age and ongoing Republican allegations that he is mentally unfit will probably be a big theme.
O’Connor’s letter mostly offered a positive picture of a president who reaps the rewards of leading a healthy lifestyle.
The letter stated that “The President continues to exercise at least five days a week and does not use any tobacco products or alcohol.”
Biden has a height of six feet and a width of 1.83 meters (nearly 80.7 kg).
Given that he had had vaccinations and booster shots, Biden’s symptoms from Covid-19 in 2022 and the subsequent rebound infection were minimal, and he “has not experienced any residual symptoms which may be deemed extended Covid.”
According to O’Connor, two problems identified in the previous yearly assessment in November 2021 mostly persist.
He frequently coughs owing to gastric reflux, and he also has a stiff gait from “wear and tear” on his spine.
The President’s gait is still stiff, but it hasn’t gotten worse since last year, according to O’Connor.
An incredibly thorough neurological examination, the doctor said, “was again reassuring in that there were no indications which would be associated with any cerebellar or other central neurological illness, such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s or ascending lateral sclerosis.”
According to O’Connor, the president has received routine treatment for the eradication of localized, non-melanoma skin malignancies. O’Connor made reference to Biden spending “a significant bit of time in the sun in his youth.”
The President’s chest lesion was removed today and submitted for a conventional biopsy, he said.
Is age a factor?
Although though it was routine, Thursday’s physical was widely observed. Democratic leaders have insisted they will support Biden if he runs again, but surveys indicate that their supporters are not overly enthusiastic.
More than half of Democrats, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll from February, think Biden is too elderly to continue.
Republican Nikki Haley, 51, who just declared her candidacy for president in 2024, called for mental health screenings for all elected officials over 75 on Wednesday. That would also hold true for Trump, 76, who she worked for while she was UN ambassador.
When questioned about the age factor in interviews, Biden cites his accomplishments while serving as president and simply answers, “Watch me.”
Vice President Kamala Harris became the first woman in US history to momentarily hold the office of president during Joe Biden’s final checkup, which included a colonoscopy under heavy anesthesia.
