Biden Calls For Assault Weapons Ban Following California Shootings

As California reeled from two horrific mass shootings in less than 48 hours, US President Joe Biden urged Congress to act swiftly to outlaw assault rifles on Tuesday.
On Monday, a group of senators proposed legislation to ban assault rifles nationwide and raise the purchasing age for such guns to 21.
“We are aware that tougher action is needed to combat the plague of gun violence in America.” In a statement, President Joe Biden urged Congress to swiftly pass the assault weapons ban and ensure the safety of American neighborhoods, schools, workplaces, and families.
Two days after a mass shooting at a Lunar New Year event near Los Angeles, a suspect in the killing of seven people in a small village in northern California was taken into custody Tuesday.
While the nation has had numerous mass shootings, Congress has repeatedly failed to reauthorize an assault rifle prohibition that expired in 2004.
Many Republicans are against a ban, citing the right to bear arms guaranteed by the constitution.
