Bank Staff Threaten to Shut Down Over Attacks

Following attacks on some commercial banks, the National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees (NUBIFIE) has threatened to suspend the services of its members across the country.

Additionally, it declared that the pullout would continue until security was secured and the threats on its employees were resolved.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Mohammed Sheikh, the general secretary of NUBIFIE, expressed shock at recent attacks on bank employees who were not adequately protected by security forces.

Therefore, Mr. Sheikh urged the federal government, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and other stakeholders to work to alleviate the hardship caused by the modification of the cash withdrawal policy.

He also pleaded with Nigerians who were unable to access their bank deposits to be understanding.

As a result, Mr. Sheikh added, “We urge on the Central Bank of Nigeria to examine the cash withdrawal policy, which has adversely affected the operations of over 200,000 Point of Sales firms in Nigeria.”
