The bus they were travelling in crashed into a parked truck in southern Egypt on Tuesday, according to officials, causing at least 22 deaths and 33 injuries.
Around 45 passengers were on board the bus when it struck the parked truck close to the hamlet of al-Barsha in the al-Minya governorate, which is located about 300 kilometers (185 miles) south of Cairo.
According to a statement from the governorate, “the vehicle was parked on the side of the road to fix a tire when it was hit from behind by the bus traveling from Sohag governorate to Cairo.”
In Egypt, where many roads are in poor condition and traffic laws are regularly disregarded, accidents are rather common.
In 2020, almost 7,000 people perished in traffic accidents statewide, according to official statistics.
